Parallel Universes

In your life, there will be at least one person you'll wish you'd met under different circumstances.

Years later, in moments of unconscious reflection, your mind will return to that time, and ponder the alternate present you might be living, without that impasse.

Seemingly simple if's...

If I had only told him what i really meant... If I had only known what i really meant... If I hadn't taken that job... If I hadn't moved... If I hadn't just stopped talking to him... If I hadn't been so scared... If I hadn't fallen into the safety of the known... If I had only taken a risk...

But remember.

At the time.
You did what you could manage.
At the time.

And,
at the time,
you weren't who you are now.

But, who you are now, and your choices today...

Can you make different decisions?

This isn't about him,
alternative futures,
or perpetuating what-ifs.

It's about you.
At this time.

Pts of Reference

below the daily story of your life that you craft in your head...

this moment, even now, passes away -
going, gone,
and decaying.

misfortunance steadily drones on the periphery of your routine...
therez constant off-camera action:
as
something-somewhere, someone-somehow
always,
already at all times,
draws its-her-his-their last
wheezing,
gasping,
sputtering,
coughing
breath.

but you, in your luckier times easily
omit, forget
and
deny that
your overlooking is, in itself,
a similarly insidious cancer

marking
your own slow metastasis shift
from benign -
one day at a time
one foot in fronta the other
- to malignant
sudden spiral
death rattle.
